Real‑Time 3D Vision for Remote Construction Operators

We attached VR180 cameras to remotely operated construction machinery and projected VR video according to the operator's viewpoint by communicating and projecting in real time, enabling operators to check the surroundings of the construction machinery. We exhibited this technology at the TDBC (Transportation Digital Business Council) booth at the "Future Manufacturing International EXPO 2025" and "Wellbeing Construction Technology Exhibition" held alongside the Osaka-Kansai Expo.
Challenges
When remotely operating construction machinery, operating with 2D screens posed challenges: the shovel would go out of view when approaching the ground, depth perception was difficult, and work operations were challenging.
Solution
We attached VR180 cameras to construction machinery and used the communication technology of ARAV Inc., which provides remote control systems for construction machinery, to transmit video in real-time from the site and project it through Portalgraph, realizing a display method that allows operators to view VR180 video from various angles with the naked eye according to their viewpoint.
Results
By enabling viewing of images from various angles through viewpoint movement, we were able to expand the range of video that operators could view. Additionally, by providing dynamic new sensation video expression through viewpoint movement, we were able to generate interest in the exhibition among visitors. We were able to create an exhibition that aligned with this exhibition's concept of "making it accessible to those unfamiliar with the construction industry."
